Overall rating 4.5/5The popular Fiat 500 was known as the Cinquecento from its inception in 1957 till 1975. It is considered as one of the earliest city cars in a compact form with a big heart and a rear mounted engine. The 500 nameplate was reintroduced in 2007 with a retro design and funky interior, based on the rugged Panda platform. This iteration of the 500 carries on all of its original traits remaining engaging to drive as well.
It's been a very popular new car since its launch in 2007 and is just as popular as a used car now. The 500 is not only cheerful, frugal and fun, and it also makes great financial sense as it depreciates in value extremely slowly for a small car. Look out for ultra-efficient TwinAir petrol or MultiJet turbodiesel engines in the trim level of your choice. Its looks, reliability, character and fuel efficiency have all helped to ensure its residual values are kept high.

The new Fiat 500 comes with a good list of standard safety features. Some highlights include adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind spot monitor, airbags, ABS, ESC, rear traffic alert, tyre pressure monitoring system, rain sensing wipers, park assist, 360-degree camera, hill hold assist, etc.
The Fiat 500 has been available with a couple of engine options since 2007. The popular engine options are the 1.0-litre mild hybrid FireFly unit, 1.2-litre petrol engine and the 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol that is known for its fuel efficiency. Additionally, Fiat also offered the popular 1.3-litre MJD diesel engine for the 500.
Over the years, the Fiat 500 has been equipped with numerous technology and infotainment features. Some key features include 10.25-inch touchscreen system, smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ADAS and connected features, premium audio system, wireless charging, etc.
The fuel consumption of the Fiat 500 varies on the specific engine and drivetrain configuration. The now discontinued 0.9-litre TwinAir engine is good for approximately 60-70 mpg, combined. Meanwhile, the current 1.0-litre hybrid is good for 53-60 mpg combined. Furthermore, the fully electric 500e has a maximum range of 200 miles for the bigger battery version making it a good city car.

Fiat 500 cars are reliable vehicles. However, it is important to buy a car with regular maintenance, service history, and maybe some form of warranty. There are some reports of electrical problems, clutch wear, timing belt issues and some suspension issues. When considering a used Fiat 500, it's also important to conduct a thorough inspection, verify the service history, and use a professional inspection service like the AA Vehicle Inspection. Being aware of hidden issues could help you make an informed decision and avoid any nasty surprises! As with any European car, if you end up buying a bad example, repairs could easily move towards four figures.
The Fiat 500 has been offered with numerous engine options over its production years. The petrol engines come in 0.9, 1.0, and 1.2-litre capacity. There are also the diesel engines in 1.3-litre capacity.
