The 356 sports car marked the debut of Porsche as a standalone carmaker. But, later in 1964, Porsche launched its successor, the 911, and the rest was history. There are iconic cars and then there is the Porsche 911. The 911 is itself a brand so big that Porsche will never be the same if you take the 911 out of it.
Beautiful to look at and even better to drive, the 911 is a force to reckon with and depending upon the depth of your wallet, it could be humble everyday sports car or a fire-breathing track weapon. The smaller Cayman and Boxster takes these same attributes but fits them into a smaller mid-engined package resulting in the perfect sports car recipe. Porsche is also known for some iconic models like the 917, 959, Carrera GT, and modern models such as the Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, and the all-electric Taycan.
Porsche as a used buy is sure to make even your everyday commute an event. But, since it a prestigious brand, running and maintenance costs will be on the higher side.
Porsche cars are some of the best engineered cars in the world. They offer cutting edge safety tech, even in lightweight sports and super cars. Some highlights from popular models are night vision assist, rear ross traffic alert, lane departure and lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, Porsche active suspension management (PASM), Porsche stability management (PSM), traction control and other safety features such as multiple airbags, and ABS.
Fuel efficiency is not often associated with a Porsche as it is a high-performance brand. However, modern models are decent when it comes to fuel efficiency. For example, the Macan is claimed to deliver between 22 to 26 mpg, combined. Meanwhile, the all-electric Taycan in its top-spec version can do an impressive 421 miles (WLTP) in one full charge! The Cayenne in the E-Hybrid version is also impressive as it can do 22-28.8 mpg (petrol) and 54 mpg (electric+petrol).
Since Porsche is an expensive high-performance brand, you expect used examples to also be on the pricier side. The Porsche 911 models hold value and are still on the expensive side. However, models such as the first-generation Cayenne is available from prices as low as £4000. Spend a bit more and you could also get a first-generation Boxster or Cayman. If it is 911 that you’re after, expect to pay close to 15,000 for the most affordable yet unloved 996 911.
Most of the models in Porsche’s lineup are offered with either a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The brand is also one of the earliest adopters of long-range electric cars with the Taycan.
Porsche’s reliability mostly depends on how well it is looked after. With proper care, and preventive maintenance, Porsche cars can be reliable. However, there are various models and engines that suffer from issues such as bore score, IMS bearing, along with electrical and other cooling issues. But Porsche has addressed most of these issues with updated versions, and generally, Porsche models post 2010 are known to be more reliable. The same also applies for the first-generation Cayenne from 2003 to 2010.
Since reliability of Porsche models differ between models, you should definitely get a Porsche inspected by a specialist or a brand expert. Some repairs could be exorbitant and cost more than the value of the car. Scary! But this can be avoided with a thorough inspection specific to models. For example, you should check for bore score issues in the 987.1 Cayman, but this issue is not present in the later 987.2 Cayman. Inspecting a Porsche can be taxing than other car makes as it is a premium marque with known/reported issues. Our AA Vehicle Inspection would be beneficial if you are eyeing a Porche as your next car. Our experts will look after everything and help you inspect a used Porsche car thoroughly to identify all problems, even the hidden ones. All you have to do is sign up, sit back and relax while our experts look over the car for you.
Yes, you can get a detailed inspection of a used Porsche car using AA Vehicle Inspection.
